and the hippos were boiled in their tanks re-design

The outset of this assignment was to design a book layout, drawing inspiration from Gutenberg and early illuminated manuscripts through French designers of the late 15th and 16th centuries. Because my publishing house is a tribute to the beatnik generation, I felt that And The Hippos Were Boiled In Their Tanks by William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac was the perfect novel. I used literal meanings as visual descriptions, symbolic of the beatnik genre. Cover photo taken by: Nathan Rupert. Edits made in PhotoShop include removing color and darkening the image.
